July 4th Gear Sales

Much like how my riding group is always peer pressuring me into buying shit for the bike, here’s a bunch of excuses to spend money this July 4th. This is going to be an expensive email.

  1. Revzilla is blasting out a bunch of stuff for up to 50% off

  2. Jane Motorcycles has got a 20% off sale running sitewide

  3. Ugly Bros isn’t doing anything specifically for July 4th but I’m spotting a bunch of pants on sale

  4. We’ve got an exclusive 20% discount for Chubby Buttons; use the code: NYCMOTO20

  5. Your fave leather brand Dainese is doing a July 4th Flash Sale

  6. Hit up BellissiMoto for 15% off site wide with the coupon code FREEDOM. I’ve already bought a few Moto Corse goodies and have more on the way

  7. Mission is running a 15% off sale on their head gaiters. These are perfect for keeping around your neck instead of remembering to put on sunblock all the time.

  8. What other sales have you seen? We’ll keep our NYC MOTO Riders Facebook Group updated with the latest.

Get your nasty moto gear into the wash

When was the last time you cleaned your gear? And I’m not just talking about taking a rag to your helmet to clean off a layer of bugs you can’t see through anymore.

Clean your 🪖 helmet

Every other ride or so, I’ll spray the inside of the helmet with Molecule’s Helmet Fresh. It helps keep the musk away.

The outside is pretty simple. If you’ve got bugs, they’re likely dried and pretty stuck on there after the ride. Grab a couple microfiber towels, warm them up, and give your helmet a spa treatment. Let it rest for a few minutes, then wipe off. For matte lids, I use Wizards Wipe Down Spray. Whatever you use, do not get it on the visor. Just use a mild soap (if you have to) and warm water on the visor.

For the interior of the helmet, break out all of the padding and hand wash it with a mild dish detergent & water mix. Let it air dry over around 24 hours and then curse yourself as you’re trying to manhandle the padding back into your Arai because they’re fucking masochists for splitting up the padding into 76 separate pieces. This is why we own multiple helmets.

Whether you’re riding in the summer or skiing in the winter (why aren’t you riding in the winter? leave the skiing to polar bears), strap Chubby Buttons to your wrist or your handlebars and quit fumbling for your damn phone when you should be paying attention watching for phone fumblers in cars.

Play/pause/forward/reverse music and answer/hang up calls like a pro without prodding your screen through your shitty gloves that say they’re touch screen. Buy a pair of Chubby Buttons and we get a few bucks. Use coupon code NYCMOTO20 to get 20% off. Totally worth it for you and me.

Your 🧥 jacket smells like shit and you should feel bad

Yeah it really does and no it’s not a rite of passage and your husband/wife hates you for it.

This guy looks like a badass with a dirty jacket; you do not.

Cleaning leather vs textile are two entirely different things so considering that we are approaching the height of the heat in summer, let’s take care of your textile jacket. It’s probably been 3 years since it’s seen a good cleaning. Riding for 3 minutes in the rain doesn’t count.

Here’s what I do to clean it:

Take out all the armor but holy shit take it from me and make sure to lay it out on a flat surface in the exact way that it came out. All of the armor is directional and you will struggle like hell getting it all back in if you don’t remember how it goes back in.

Do the same with your textile pants while you’re at it.

Jacket armor on the left and pants armor on the right

Dead simple after that. I close all the zippers, turn the jacket inside out and throw it in the wash on a gentle lukewarm cycle using Nikwax Tech Wash as detergent. Once done, hang it up to dry, then place all of the armor back in place hoping your kids and/or wife didn’t move it and ruin your placement. The jacket should look like new.

Yeah, your 🥾 leather boots are gross too

Spray the inside of your shoes with a Scholl’s Odor Blocker once a week or every other ride.

  1. Preparing for Cleaning: Remove laces and any dirt or debris from your leather boots by gently brushing or wiping them with a soft cloth.

  2. Spot Cleaning: Treat specific areas with stains using a leather cleaner or a mixture of mild soap and water. Gently scrub the affected areas with a soft brush or cloth.

  3. Cleaning the Entire Boot: Wipe down the entire surface of the boots using a damp cloth or sponge. Use a mild leather cleaner if necessary, following the product instructions.

  4. Conditioning the Leather: Apply a leather conditioner or cream to restore moisture and flexibility to the leather. Follow the product instructions and evenly distribute the conditioner using a soft cloth.

  5. Drying: Allow your leather boots to air dry naturally. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight or using heat sources, as this can cause the leather to crack or shrink.

  6. Polishing and Protecting: Once the boots are dry, buff them with a clean cloth to restore shine. Consider applying a leather protector or waterproofing spray to enhance their resistance to moisture and extend their lifespan.
