Summer riding, the one-percenters, and revisiting Bear Mountain

Everything moto around NYC. Delivered to your inbox weekly.

Need to know

  1. 🛞 🛞 Two Wheel Tuesday this week is back at House of Machines in Manhattan. One rule: NO REVVING!

  2. 🚀 A 300hp Harley, a 2281cc V12 from Allen Milyard, a 326hp supercharged H2R and 7 others make up the ten most powerful motorcycles built ever

  3. 🏍️ National Ride to Work Day is today so go back home, grab your bike, and maybe go back to work. You do you.

  4. ⚠️ 🚨 GTFO NYC. First speed cameras all over the place, then mid-town tolls, now speed limiters?

  5. 🙈 Where was this damn bike when I ran out of gas. 2,700 miles on a single “tank”?!

  6. Some beautiful bikes on this “own & hold these in 2023” list

Quit 🥵 sweating in your leathers

This doesn’t have to be you in the summer

There are a few times of the year when riding is just perfect. Then there are the other times where we try to do everything we can to make it less miserable.

Summer’s one of those times. The weather as it is right at this moment (68F and sunny in the city) is just perfect. But then the temp heads up to the low 80s and I start to wish I wasn’t in black leather at a stop light waiting for the damn hotdog cart vendor to finish mounting the cart to his 1995 Explorer so he stops blocking the intersection.

It doesn’t have to be so damn sweaty. I’ve ridden in the city through the summer & winter and there are definitely jackets & pants that shed more sweat than others.

Here’s a few:

  1. Knox Urbane Pro Mk3 Armored Shirt
I really do love this shirt. And honestly, I’d call it a full jacket. It’s got good armor in the shoulders, elbows, back protector, great pockets all over the damn place, light branding, and lets in air very well. This is such a great jacket in the city which means I have less of an excuse to just ride in a shirt to get from point a to point b. I wouldn’t wear this in the twists or more spirited rides.

  2. Dainese Energyca Air Jacket

This is another great jacket. Paired with a back protector, this one’s great for the canyon/backroad/highway rides in the summer. Plenty of protection, air movement, and fairly light weight.

  3. Dainese Dry Shirt & Dry Pants base layer
These two are indispensable in the summer. Get yourself a few pairs of both and wear under your summer jacket/pants so you don’t have to go peeling off your outer layer from your cotton shirt. I’ve worn this base layer below a race suit and not only was I able to slide in and out of it way easier that anyone else but it also meant that none of my suit was stuck to me a I rode.

  4. These are your summer riding pants, full stop. Get yourself a few pairs of them and be comfy. Great knee and shin protection but nothing for your hips unfortunately.

  5. If you don’t like the style, then check out Ugly Bros or NBT. With Ugly Bros, if you know you know but stay away from the joggers. No belt loops and the elastic on the bottom is like 3 inches too wide. NBT is a cheaper alternative and look remarkably similar to their Ugly Bros counterparts.

🤡 WTF Are The One-Percenters?!

This is what one-percent looks like

Rumors have swirled, and Hollywood has spun tales, but now it's time to separate fact from fiction. Let’s dive a bit deeper into the one-percenters clubs in the tri-state area.

Emerging from the ashes of post-WWII America, these clubs embody the rebellious spirit and unwavering brotherhood that sets them apart. The Pagans, Hells Angels, Outlaws MC, and The Breed are just a taste of the colorful characters that have left an indelible mark on the region. Their history is riddled with explosive conflicts and shadowy criminal activities. However, it's crucial to remember that these clubs do not define the wider motorcycling community. They exist as a unique subculture that dwells on the fringes.

I dug deeper on some of the conflicts, the clubs themselves, and where we stand now. I was going to post the whole story here in the newsletter but honestly, it’s a bit heavy as just a feature here. Smash the link to read the story ⏩️.

⛰️ Let’s go back to Bear Mountain

My bike was at Hudson Valley Motorcycles for a warranty repair and so I grabbed the train to head up there and pick it up.

I built a quick little ride on Detecht taking backroads from HVMC over the Bear Mountain Bridge and then covering all the greats:

  1. Arden Valley Road

  2. Kanawauke Rd

  3. Seven Lakes Drive

  4. Tiorati Circle

Yeah, you can cruise through these roads at the speed limit (and we actually did that this past weekend too) but that’s not what this is. Ripping these roads back to back will leave you tired.

Check out the link for the full route and map links.

Here’s some footage from the ride.
