Splitting lanes, part 2

Let’s continue this from the last newsletter. Check out the first one here.

I’ll pick up where we left off:

Know your width: Giant cruisers and BMW adv (915mm) beasts are a tad bit wider than a Yamaha R6 (706mm). That’s not even taking into account the 15 pieces of luggage a fully dressed bike has on the rear. The big bikes are just not going to lane split as well in tight spaces. Smaller bikes should pay attention to how wide your mirrors are too. Tagging a car mirror with yours isn’t ideal but won’t put you down. Tagging a car with your bar is going to result in a bad day.

Fold in your mirrors but know that you’re eliminating your rear view. That split second expecting to see out of your rear mirrors and then realizing they’re folded could result in some nasty shit. Fold your mirrors in if you absolutely have to. Try folding them in just enough to be able to still see a bit in the corners.

Leave. enough. space. I’ll say it again: leave enough space between you and your buddy in front of you. I don’t have enough fingers on my hands & toes to count how many times I’ve had to slam on my brakes as cars shift lanes and shift closer to me within their lane. Or sometimes, I just misjudge the distance and rethink splitting. I’ve also been in situations where I may have taken my eye off the guy in front of me and then have to slam on my brakes coming a few inches from his rear tire.

You do not want to be in a situation where you’re slamming on your brakes between two cars. You’re compressing the front suspension if you’re fisting the front brake and god help you if your front tire isn’t straight. And a foot-full of the rear brake could mean your rear end sliding right into the Camry on your right/left. Or under a semi. Leave enough space between you and your group.

Watch your aggression. Throwing a finger or slapping a mirror might make you giddy with revenge but creates a dangerous situation for your guys behind you. You just pissed off a cager that can no longer get to you. Who do you think they’ll go for next?

Don’t split in and out of lanes. I used to do this all the time until someone finally told me that I split so deeply into lanes (too far left/right) that all they saw was cars slamming on their brakes. The right way to split at speed is to stay in the lane you’re creating and don’t lean the bike into car lanes; it scares the shit out of them and forces some to slam on their brakes.

😇 Here’s the address of the new garage

One of the huge challenges of riding/living in the city with a motorcycle is parking. I’ve heard this from a bunch of people that are constantly having issues locating garages they can park their bike.

I’ve found a friendly garage that loves the idea of dedicating a relatively large space to riders right in Manhattan (Midtown East) and I am working with them directly on next steps. No middlemen this time.

We’re going to have space for about 40 bikes in this space and we can make it our own. Pricing will likely be right around $300 and located a few blocks from the FDR right around 57th & 1st

NYC MOTO Riders Club Members are still going to get first dibs on space here.
