Need to know this week…

  1. This week’s 🛞🛞 Two Wheel Tuesday is at 🍺 18th Ward but this one’s special: @rawmeatandrepairco is doing wax repair demos so bring yours

  2. Bikes & Breakfast is at City Island this Sunday 🥚 🥓 🥐

  3. Wicked Wednesdays 💀 is at 🍻 Barley on the Hudson this Wednesday

  4. Careful on Arden Valley guys. We took a ride through this past weekend and the thick canopy is a bit of a nightmare, creating wet roads and debris is everywhere.

  5. PJ’s Track Days are phenomenal and you should come out next month

  6. Can’t get enough of this NYC series from Huckberry. ❤️‍🔥 ▶️

The MPG ⛽️ of it all

I’ve seen riders keep literal spreadsheets of every fill-up on their bikes to measure MPG over time. WTF do they do with all that data? I feel like they retain data for the same reason that riders retain terabytes of Insta360 footage (you know who you are). Cut the cord bros.

Anyway

Motor bikes are all over the damn place when it comes to fuel efficiency and just like some cars & SUV’s barely squeeze out 15 mpg while other vehicles push 40, bikes are no different.

And maybe I have a bit more of a reason to dig into this than you do. My bike gets around 28 mpg and has a fuel tank the size of my coffee cup. I’ve run out of gas on the FDR 2 weeks into owning the bike.

So I did some digging. Keep in mind that there are huge caveats when it comes to measuring MPG:

  1. The motorcycle style (motocross vs naked bike vs sport bike vs cruiser, etc) has a lot to do with how much fuel you burn per gallon. My 203hp (to the wheel) Streetfighter V4S will burn about 30 mpg but a Honda will push damn near 60.

  2. Twisting the throttle obviously has an impact on MPG. While my bike will get me 32 mpg on the highway (figuring about 20% throttle on average in 6th gear), that number would plummet to around 20 mpg on the track, where the throttle will be cracked open to 80-100% more often

  3. Not all sport bikes are created equal. The BMW M1000R has next-level aero and all that tech makes it a thrill machine, but it'll still give you around 37 MPG. Maybe those wings aren't so silly after all. Just kidding; they’re silly.

Hit up Cross Country Powersports this weekend

Cross Country Powersports is hosting a Royal Enfield demo day this Saturday the 12th. Check em out and say hi to Pedro while you’re there.

They’ll have these bikes available for demos:

  • 350cc (Classic or Meteor)

  • 400CC (Himalayan or Scram 411)

Make sure to reserve in advance and check out my full route on how to get there and where to go after.

Get your ass to the track for PJ’s Track Days

Getting your bike to the track, whether it’s your clapped out Gixxer 600 or your upright BMW GS, is one of the best experiences you’ll ever have.

I’ve been to California Superbike School twice and to the track once (just this past weekend). Both times have been one of the most educating, exhilarating, coolest fucking experiences of my life. I really can’t overstate that. It’s awesome. Most riders that go for the first time become instantly hooked. Out of the 15 or so riders that went to the Empire Ducati track day hosted by PJ last weekend are re-booking with PJ for September.

I’ve got a whole write-up coming on what to expect but know this: most of the people that went with us have never been on track before. PJ had organized the event in a such a way that made room for beginners that are doing their best getting around the track as well as experts that are pulling 1:40 lap times around NYST.

PJ’s got another track day coming this September 25 and he’s got a few spots left. Hit him up and tell him I sent you. Then join the FB NYC MOTO Riders Group (yeah, we have one) and ask for help if you need it. We’ve all been there and made mistakes. You don’t have to make the same mistakes we did.
