❄️ NYC MOTO’s Winter Gear Guide

Yeah, winter is coming but we've still got quite a few beautiful riding days left. As long as you have the right gear and mindset.

Tires take a bit longer to warm up, mornings are chillier, and wind chill at 80mph is a thing. Balaclavas, thermals, heated grips, etc all help until it's time to switch to full heated riding gear.

On the way to Boston

I’ve ridden through my share of cold days and yeah, while I’d prefer to ride in 70 degree weather year-round, we maybe see that for a few months out of the year around NYC. But it is possible and you don’t have to be completely miserable. Just don’t do what I did and pretend that a ride out to Boston in 35F was a good thing. It isn’t. It blows.

I’m not going to go into detail on how to ride in the winter; that’ for another newsletter. Let’s get in to the gear I use:

Upper Body

I try to keep shit as simple as possible. I use a sweat wicking underlayer so something like this would work fine. Under Armor or Rhone base layers are great too. Then I’ll slap on a windblocker zip up. The one I have is sadly no longer available but this one from Dainese looks fantastic. On top of the windblocker comes the heated 12v jacket. I’ve used this one from Hotwired for a few winters. It keeps my core super warm and has never failed on me.

Hands

I’ve used multiple pairs and honestly, this is all based on personal preference. I like the freedom of using battery operated gloves and these from Highway21 have worked just fine for me. You can go with a wired version from Gerbing and save some coin but keep in mind that Gerbing requires their own controller units so unless you’re bought into that system, just stick with the battery operated gloves.

The best combination is heated battery gloves and heated grips. I’d set both on medium on the coldest days and be fine on all but long highway rides.

Legs

For me, keeping my legs warm is more important than torso so I spent some time to find something that works. And in the spirit of keeping it simple, all I use is a few layers.

I’ve messed with thermals but now prefer something more sweat wicking like these from Dainese as the base layer. The name of the game in the base layer is stretch, especially in your legs. You want to be able to move around and get on/off your bike with relative ease.

On top of the base layer, I’ll throw on the heated pants from Hotwired and jeans on top of that from SA1NT. They’re pricey but god damn are they comfy and good. Use NYCMOTO20 for 20% off.

A note on compatibility and power

There’s a reason why I don’t use heated socks & keep my gloves on batteries. The electric system on your motorcycle isn’t as robust as what’s in your car. I had no issue powering the heated pant/jacket/glove combo on my Scrambler 1100, Monster 1200s, or Streetfighter V4S but your mileage may vary. Smaller bikes may struggle.

On top of that, you will need a connection to power the gear. Most bikes come with leads from the battery out of the factory but make sure you’ve got what it takes to power the gear for your bike.

Italian Sporting Bikes of the 70’s is a unique short documentary that showcases some of the rarest and most exquisite bikes ever produced. Curated by master mechanic Peter Boggia in NYC, this is the first time ever these bikes have appeared together in one location, a collection costing over $1 million USD casually showcased at a clandestine location in Redhook, Brooklyn. While only a select few, personally invited individuals were given access to the event, this documentary captures the excitement and form of these pristine machines in a playful and powerful way.
